Exclusive Artist Interview: Rich Davies MAY Have Been Paid 1 Million Dollars By A Client Once…

Screen Shot 2013-09-05 at 7.15.59 PMHey, I hope your Thursday is going well.  I am hoping to make it a bit better by giving you the 411 on UK artist, Rich Davies, aka – Turksworks.  As with each new member of the Poster Posse I was excited with Rich agreed to participate in our Pacific Rim Project. He absolutely delivered the goods and NOW we get to learn more about the man behind the incredible art.  Sit back, eat your waffles, (that means you Chris Garofalo!) and enter the world of Rich Davies.

BLURPPY - How long have you been creating art in the pop culture scene? How did you get started?

RD - I’ve probably been doing it for about 2 years now. I just wanted to do something a little more creative from my day job at the time so it all started there.

Blade-Runner-Rich-DaviesPersonal work. This is my own take on the classic movie poster of Blade Runner. It was also an exercise in digital painting and composition. – Rich Davies

BLURPPY - That “creativity bug” is hard to ignore. (Much like the soundtrack from Disney’s Teen Beach Movie.)  Is art your full time job? If not, what else do you do?

RD - I’m a graphic designer by trade, I have been for over 10 years. I do have a background in drawing and painting though so sometimes the two merge.

Iron-Man-3-Rich-DaviesIron Man 3 – by Rich Davies

BLURPPY - There was a sensational Seinfeld episode about what happens when ‘worlds collide.’  In your case we get some pretty fantastic art so I say let the colliding begin! Whose work do you admire or collect?

RD - Well I’ve always been a huge movie fan and as a kid, the poster art was just as important as the film. I love Struzan of course but also the likes of Roger Kastel who designed one of the great movie posters, The Empire Strikes Back, Bob Peak and David Grove. I also love the work of Gary Pullin, Jason Edmiston and Jock too – all supremely talented artists. I just wish I could afford to collect some of their work!

The-Empire-Strikes-Back-Rich-DaviesThe Empire Strikes Back – by Roger Kastel

BLURPPY - Nice group you named there.  I was blown away by the solo show that Jason recently put together for Mondo, Gary ALWAYS brings creepy magic to whatever he touches and don’t even get me started on the brilliance of Jock.  My biggest disappointment of this year’s San Diego Comic Con was that I missed meeting him!  NEXT YEAR!  What one print, by another artist, blows your mind?Battlefield

Battlefield – by Tsuyoshi Nagano

RD - I love a particular piece (Battlefield) by Japanese artist, Tsuyoshi Nagano. He creates these huge, epic pieces of art which I could look at for hours, there’s so much detail involved. Its just technically flawless and it has a nostalgic feel to it. Amazing.

BLURPPY - You aren’t kidding about the detail work.  Pretty exquisite stuff. With so much art being produced these days, how do you keep things fresh?

RD - With each project, I’ll try something different to what I did previously whether it’s a technical aspect or maybe theme-wise. The beauty of doing a lot of film posters is that each film is different so you can experiment with styles or colors that you’ve never tried before.

Looper-Rich-DaviesFrench film distribution company SND approached me to produce a new poster design to promote the blockbuster movie, Looper starring Bruce Willis. The design went through a few different versions until they settled on a retro, ‘pulp-like’ feel. It’s currently being used to promote the movie internationally online. – Rich Davies

BLURPPY - If you aren’t moving forward you are getting left behind right? Besides working on BLURPPY’s Poster Posse Project, what is your dream project?

RD - Well it doesn’t really get any better than the Poster Posse Projects really does it? If I had to pick a close second it would have to be working on a big Hollywood movie poster for someone like Ridley Scott. Not too much to ask really! Universal-Horror-Classics-Rich-Davies

Universal Horror Classics – by Rich Davies

BLURPPY - First off, thank you for the kind words.  Secondly, given your talent, I really DON’T think it’s asking too much!  I’ve gotta get you two together. Now where did I leave Ridley’s card….?  If you weren’t creating highly desirable works of art for adoring fans, what else would you do?

RD - That’s a tough one. Being creative is the only thing I’ve ever imagined doing but being such a huge movie obsessive, I’d say a film director.

BLURPPY - The more I reach out to you artists, the more that desire comes to the forefront.  What movies are you excited to see this year/ next year?

RD - I’m looking forward to Thor: The Dark World and the new Hobbit film later this year, Godzilla and Chris Nolan’s Interstellar next year. 2015 should be interesting year for movies too!

BLURPPY - Well I can let you in on a little secret.  This is an exclusive reveal.  You have just touched on a future Poster Posse Project.  I’m not going any further with that but there you have it.  Let the speculation begin. So, what is your favorite print from your portfolio and why?

RD - My favorite is always the most recent one so I would have to say my Pacific Rim poster at the moment.

Pacific-Rim-RIch-DaviesPacific Rim (Poster Posse Project #3) – by Rich Davies

BLURPPY - Well I’m mighty fond of that one myself.  Actually….I can’t WAIT to get mine framed!  (Yes I am bragging people, it’s not attractive but I had to do it because that piece is AWESOME!) What’s your biggest pet peeve about the pop culture art scene?

RD - One thing I have noticed and I’m sure some of the Poster Posse would back me up on this, is the constant copying of an artist’s print and then reselling it online. I’ve seen some of my own work and other PP members’ work for sale on eBay for instance. It’s so difficult to stop this and can be incredibly frustrating to find your work for sale like that. Ok, rant over…

Star-Trek-Rich-DaviesStar Trek- Rich Davies

-startrekStar-Trek-detail-Rich-DaviesBLURPPY - No, No, No….I hear you.  Matt Ferguson has been getting bombarded with this recently.  I only wish I had bought the Pacific Rim t-shirt with his image before he sent a cease and desist to the website that was selling them.  That HAS to be frustrating for you guys.  It’s great when your fans have your back though and bring it to your attention so you can deal with it.  (Note to fans, keep up with the watchful eye!)  What has been your best experience to date, in the pop culture art scene?

RD - I know everyone says it but it has to be being invited to join the Poster Posse. It just gives me a platform to showcase my work and also a sense of being part of something special with such talented and generous artists so thank YOU too Don.

Twelve-Monkeys-Rich-DaviesTwelve Monkeys – by Rich Davies

BLURPPY - Believe it or not, I’m blushing.  I believe that great art deserves to be seen. The crew on the Poster Posse has delivered fantastic work on all three projects to date and I ABSOLUTELY appreciate what YOU guys do and can’t WAIT to see what folks deliver on Poser Posse Projects 4, 5, 6 and beyond.  (Oh yes people, they are on the calendar and ready to go.  Again, let the speculation run amok as to what we will tackle next. Rest assured, it shall always be worth the wait!)  What is the best interview question you’ve ever been asked and what was your answer?

RD - It wasn’t an interview question but I was asked by a client once “How much do you want to be paid?” I think I’ve been waiting all my life for a question like that.

The-Wolverine-Rich-DaviesThe Wolverine – by Rich Davies

BLURPPY - Hahahahaha…Please tell me you did your best Dr Evil impression, put your pinky to your mouth and stated, “One MILLION dollars!“  What do you have on tap for the rest of 2013 and don’t give us that B.S. line, “Lots of stuff , just can’t talk about it yet

RD - Ooh lots of stuff! I’m working on a series of portraits based on a much loved TV show at the moment, have a couple of new film posters due out soon too. I’m also planning something special for the Doctor Who 50th anniversary celebrations too. Plus in the middle of all that I have a trip to Vegas to fit in!

Game-Of-Thrones-Rich-DaviesGame Of Thrones Prints – by Rich Davies

Whoa wait a minute, Vegas?  You GOTTA find time to shoot over to California!  You will be so close.  I can take you to some great food spots, show you the sights of Orange County, we can sit in endless traffic on the 5 freeway, it will be great!  We need to talk further on this…

Ok, you survived the phase 1 of the interview, now it’s time to see if you are up to phase 2.  I’m gonna ask you 10 quick questions, all you have to do is simply tell me the first thing that pops into your mind.

DC or Marvel?

DC. No question.

Most Desired Super Power?

Flight – it might help me overcome my fear of heights.

Who is your favorite Star Wars Character and why?

Han Solo of course.

Best movie snack?

Munchies

Growing up, what was your favorite TV show?

Doctor Who and Thunderbirds

What’s the best way for fans to keep up with all you have going on?

My website, www.turksworks.co.uk or alternatively I try to keep my FACEBOOK and TWITTER  accounts up to date.

What’s your favorite pop culture event?

Always wanted to go to San Diego Comic Con.

Who is your favorite fictional character of all time and why? (Can be comic books, movies, literature, etc)

As a huge Neil Gaiman fan, it would have to be The Sandman.

Would you rather design the poster for an upcoming Star Wars movie or the upcoming Blade Runner prequel?

Seeing no one other than Struzan could possibly do the Star Wars poster then Blade Runner it is.

Star-Wars-Rich-DaviesStar Wars – Rich Davies

Ok, there you have it and as always I have a couple of things to touch upon.  First up, just as Yoda said, “There is another…” I have a feeling we DO have someone in line to do the next installment of Star Wars Posters and they are part of the Poster Posse!

I think Rich SHOULD make it over to Cali whilst he is in Sin City and I think he needs to book his ticket to next years SDCC PRONTO!  Ben Whitesell can attest to how amazing it is as he just went to HIS first SDCC THIS year.

Huge thanks to Rich for his work with the Poster Posse AND for taking the time to chat it up with me and let folks into his universe.  Stay tuned folks, he is locked and loaded for Poster Posse Project #4 which hits the Blurppy-sphere on October 21st!

Exclusive Artist Interview: Robert Bruno Brilliantly Balances His Obsession With Pop Culture With A Passion For Sports Illustration

$

BLURPPY EXCL TMWe recently finished our latest Poster Posse Project and it has been called our “most diverse offering to date.” (It can be viewed HERE and HERE.)  As is customary with each project, we take some time to interview the newest members of the group.  This time out we speak with Brooklyn artist, Robert BrunoAside from his pop culture offering Bruno also has an extensive collection of sports art as well. Here ya go, read along and let’s see if we can learn something about Brooklyn boy, Robert Bruno.

robert-bruno-rick-grimesRick Grimes – Robert Bruno

BLURPPY – How long have you been creating art in the pop culture scene? How did you get started?

RB - I’ve been drawn to film since I was a kid. While my friends were out collecting baseball cards and action figures, I was watching and collecting as many movies as I could. Throughout my childhood, while I was in school and now that I’m working in the field I’ve always been drawn to interesting characters in film and television.

BLURPPY – Soooooo…. what you are saying is that you have a massive VHS collection collecting  dust?  Is art your full time job? If not, what else do you do?

RB - I certainly consider myself first and foremost a freelance illustrator. I’ve been working in the freelance world since graduating Pratt Institute in 2012. However like most young illustrators, I need a supplemental job to pay the pays. For the past year I’ve been managing a court reporting agency in downtown Brooklyn. The company was actually kind enough to let me create my own sort of makeshift gallery space inside. I have about 8 pieces displayed throughout the office!

robert-bruno-49ers49ers Superbowl Montage – Robert Bruno

BLURPPY – Nice, a mini-gallery at work! Whose work do you admire or collect?

RB - I am obsessed with the old school film posters so naturally Drew Struzan is my hero. Though in addition to Drew I also love the work of Alex Ross, Grzegorz Domaradzki (AKA Gabz), Dennis Gonchar and fellow Poster Posse members Richard Davies and Paul Shipper.

BLURPPY – Hmmmm… Struzan….that name sounds familiar…. I”m going to have to look him up.  I was thinking about Alex Ross the other day.  I have yet to come across a piece of his work that I DON’T like.  Considering how much stuff he puts out, I’d say that’s impressive. What one print, by another artist, blows your mind?

RB - I could probably name anyone of Drew’s posters but one piece in particular is Gabz’ “Walking Dead” print. The masterful compositional skill paired with the incredible control of color and negative space just blew my mind.

twd001“The Walking Dead” by Gabz

BLURPPY – I’d say Gabz is a ‘master’ of negative space.  It always adds to the print, never takes away. With so much art being produced these days, how do you keep things fresh and interesting?

RB - I am always reading a new article on photoshop tips and techniques or watching a demo or new tutorial. As cliche as is sounds, in this industry you really do learn something new everyday. I feel that for myself as a digital artist, the better handle I have on the techniques and programs I use the more time I can focus on keeping my ideas ‘fresh’ and unique.

robert-bruno-sons-of-anarchy“Sons of Anarchy” – Robert Bruno

BLURPPY – I also know a special ‘secret’ resource for this as well, but like I said, that’s “SECRET” and you already use it.  Besides working on BLURPPY’s Poster Posse Projects, what is your dream project?

RB - In addition to pop culture based art, I’m a sports fanatic. I grew up playing baseball, football, and running track. While I wasn’t nearly good enough at any of the three to go far I settled for the next best thing in my mind…creating illustrations and paintings for them. Over half of my personal work is sports related art. I guess my dream job would be working as an illustrator for ESPN or Nike.

robert-bruno-air-jordan“Flight” by Robert Bruno

BLURPPY – Both of those would be a feather in your cap.  I’d like to see you do something for the Dan Patrick Show and have it up in his “man cave.”  If you weren’t creating highly desirable works of art for adoring fans, what else would you do?

RB - I would probably look into teaching art in either high-school or college. I was fortunate enough to have some truly inspiring teachers and professors in school and I would love the opportunity to pass down some of that inspiration to the next generation of artists.

BLURPPY – Very noble of you.  What movies are you excited to see this year/ next year?

RB - I’ll start with a film I saw this past weekend, the “Lone Survivor.” Wow. One of the most awe inspiration films I have ever seen. If you haven’t seen it yet, stop reading this and go do so! Aside from that looks to be a pretty exciting year in the box office, I spent about 30 hours creating my piece for PP5, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” so naturally I’m pretty excited for that. Just to name a few others…”300 Rise of an Empire”, “X:Men Days of Future Past”, “Noah”, and “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” all look promising.

Captain America Robert Bruno“Captain America: The Winter Soldier” by Robert Bruno

BLURPPY – What is your favorite print from your portfolio and why?

RB - I’m pretty critical of all my stuff, but I guess I would say my Game of Thrones inspired ‘Last Targaryen’ piece. I just felt that I was successful in achieving the mood and dynamic of that particular storyline in a single image.

GOT_TLD‘Last Targaryen’ by Robert Bruno

BLURPPY – You had me when you said, “Daenerys Targaryen“.  She is so awesome and incredibly ho… wait, you did say “Daenerys Targaryen” didn’t you? What’s your biggest pet peeve about the pop culture art scene?

RB - It is so saddening to hear about the next blockbuster movie coming out and then see the poster be a giant photo of the leads head with a gun. I don’t understand the marketing standpoint that has the film studios using less and less illustrated posters and more and more cheesy filtered photographs. I want to be inspired and drawn to go and see the darn movie, a massive overexposed photo of Tom Cruises face doesn’t do it for me.

BLURPPY – Well, that really is one of the driving forces behind the Poster Posse so you have landed in the right place. What has been your best experience to date, in the pop culture art scene?

RB - To be very honest, having the recent opportunity to take part and collaborate in these gallery shows like Blurppy and Hero Complex Gallery. Not only is the subject matter killer, but the opportunity to work alongside so many great illustrators, and more importantly, great people is a real treat.

Robert-bruno-the-grey“The Grey” by Robert Bruno

robert-bruno-Ghostbusters_FB“Ghostbusters” by Robert Bruno

BLURPPY – The Posse is packed with passionate, persuasive,  personnel that continually push and propel each other with every poster project. (Say THAT 5 times fast.) What was your most embarrassing moment as an artist?

RB - Hah oh this is easy. In my freshman year of college I was required to take a class call LCD (Light Color & Design) We had this extended assignment over the winter break to do a ‘Holiday Portrait.’ Me, as someone who really enjoys painting people decided to take the assignment very literally. I painted both myself and my sister standing in front of our Christmas tree decked out in ugly Christmas sweaters. Turns out my professor was trying to stress a more symbolic meaning of the holidays to you. I’ll never forget showing up to the critique with my glorified holiday self portrait and seeing everyone else’s thought provoking, symbolic paintings. It wasn’t even as if I could just pretend like mine wasn’t mine….it was a giant painting of me. My professor, the pleasant man he was, always had us line the work up in a single row and would stand in the back of the room and point to each one with a laser pointer. Of course mine was the first to get pointed at. He simply pointed at it, disapprovingly shook his head and moved onto the next piece.

BLURPPY – Hahahahahaha…you HAVE to share that piece with me sometime. (I won’t ask you to do it now, here in this forum.)  What is the best interview question you’ve ever been asked and what was your answer?

RB - I was once asked where I draw my inspiration from. After thinking about it, I realized that I’m lucky enough to wake up every morning and do something that I love. I am so thankful to my family for having the faith and confidence in me to follow my dreams and aspirations that I guess in a way I’m inspired by them.

Robert-burno-sherlock“Sherlock Holmes” by Robert Bruno

BLURPPY – I’m right there with you.  My wife LITERALLY supports my endeavors every single day and THAT is a blessing.  What do you have on tap for 2014 and don’t give us that line, “Lots of stuff , just can’t talk about it yet”

RB - Oh I’ll talk about it. I have a habit of packing my schedule as tight as it can be. I actually rather enjoy working under extreme pressure. In 2014 I’ll do just about as many gallery shows as I possibly can in addition to taking on freelance gigs, private commissions, and maybe if I’m lucky a few personal pieces. I am particularly excited about several upcoming Poster Posse projects along with shows from the Hero Complex Gallery and Ltd. Gallery. Unfortunately I really can’t talk about them though…

Somehow I just KNEW there would be stuff you COULDN’T talk about!  Ok, the next batch of questions are meant to be rapid fire.  Say whatever comes to mind and just know that I will KNOW if you aren’t being honest.

Robert-bruno-avengers-assemble“Avengers Assemble” by Robert Bruno

- DC or Marvel?

Marvel, though the story of Superman is the most unique and interesting storyline in any comic.

- Most Desired Super Power?

I think the ability to read peoples minds would be pretty beneficial at times…

- Who is your favorite Star Wars Character and why?

Although I think Darth Maul was one of the most bad-ass characters I’ve ever seen, I have to go with Vadar. Anakin Skywalker is such a tragic character, he sold his soul to evil in an effort to protect the ones he loved. In the process he lost his arms/legs/most of the skin on his face but gained that iconic black suit, mask, breathing device and voice that we all love.

- Best movie snack?

Anything that doesn’t make noise!

-  What is your favorite gadget?

Love my graphics tablet, I use the Wacom Intuous4. Medium size to be specific.

- Growing up, what was your favorite TV show?

-I really loved the “Batman Beyond” series.

- What’s the best way for fans to keep up with all you have going on?

I use social media a lot, I update my Facebook and Tumblr illustration pages quite often and post in-depth detailed shots of my work on my Behance page.

BLURPPY – What’s your favorite pop culture event?

Probably the New York City Comic Con, I live in Brooklyn so that’s most accessible for me.

BLURPPY – Who is your favorite fictional character of all time and why? (Can be comic books, movies, literature, etc)

I’m gonna have to name two because my girlfriend makes fun of my ‘man-crush’ of both. Without a doubt Rick Grimes from the Walking Dead and Gannicus from the series Spartacus. Rick is an incredibly complex character who has really transformed and developed as the series has progressed. Gannicus is just awesome, he fights, he drinks, and he has lots and lots of sex. Enough said.

- Would you rather design the poster for an upcoming Star Wars movie or the upcoming Blade Runner prequel?

I’m a 90′s guy so Blade Runner was just before my time, Star Wars was re-released in the theaters when I was around 6 or 7 and it was love at first site. So Star Wars hah.

Junior-MintsTo recap I think we can all agree that Robert was alluding to the fact that Junior Mints are the BEST movie snack EVER!  I’m sure we learned some more in-depth stuff but for me, food always wins out.  HUGE thanks to Robert for taking the time to participate in the Poster Posse Projects and for also answering my questions.   Stay tuned because he has signed on for additional Projects and I can’t WAIT to see what he comes up with.  Head over to his STORE to get some awesome stuff that will make your walls happy.

Tim Doyle’s “UnReal Estate” series has been an ongoing fan favorite for some time now and on February 6th through the 22nd, he will reveal all new art as part of his third solo show with Spoke Art.

SixFeetUnder-TimDoyleSix Feet Under

Simpsons-TimDoyleThe Simpsons

Here is the official press release for the event from Spoke Art:

Inspired by the popular culture landscape, quite literally, Doyle re-interprets the iconic settings found in contemporary cult television. These places, though fictional, have become a part of the universal psyche, ingrained in the minds of cartoon and serialized television fans worldwide. The prevalence in contemporary culture of this medium, especially with the excesses of the internet, have transformed fictional characters and scenes into something so close to tangible that they’re immediately recognizable even when viewed through an alternate lens.

The artist begins first with a graphite drawing on board, which is scanned and colored digitally. From there, Doyle hand prints a run of limited edition serigraphs (screen prints) which he creates entirely in-house. As an artist known not just for his illustrative talents but also as a craftsman, Doyle’s screen prints often utilize masterful techniques such as split fountains and glow in the dark inks.

GameofThrones-TImDoyleGame Of Thrones

Since it’s debut in 2011, the “UnReal Estate” series has been a massive success, with both back to back shows selling out in full. For the third installment in the ongoing survey, Doyle has created all new interpretations of locations from both classic and contemporary television, revisiting popular shows and breaking new ground with more topical and current series.

On my birthday, April 6th, HBO will launch into season 4 of their incredibly popular series, “Game Of Thrones.”  Season 4 will mostly be based on the second half of A Storm of Swords, the third book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series by George R.R. Martin.

The official synopsis for season 4 of Game of Thrones season 4, titled “Two Swords,” is as follows:  “Tyrion welcomes a guest to King’s Landing. At Castle Black, Jon Snow finds himself unwelcome. Dany is pointed to Meereen, the mother of all slave cities. Arya runs into an old friend.”

This is great but we all know it’s all about Daenerys Targaryen and her spectacular….dragons.  Check out the new trailer below and then start thinking what you will get me for my birthday when Game Of Thrones: “Two Swords” – Season 4 premiers on April 6th only on HBO.

Fans of HBO’s hit series are eagerly awaiting it’s return on April 6th.  For those of you that are having trouble and anxiety waiting, HBO has a Tumblr art page titled “Game Of Thrones: Beautiful Death – The Official Death-by-Death Countdown To Game Of Thrones Season 4.”

Game of thrones1Season 1 Episode 2

Game of thrones 4Season 2 Episode 4

The page features official art as well as fan art based off the series broken down by season and episode.  They release art each day and the art that is already up there is pretty awesome.

Game of thrones 2Season 1 Episode 5

The artist responsible for these beautiful prints is U.K. artist Robert Ball.  Here is what he had to say about the series over on his BLOG:

The most challenging aspect of all this has been trying to think of different kinds of ‘ideas’ for each picture, without simply recreating the scene as was filmed. There’s been ‘graphic’ ideas – the map of Westeros in blood, the blood on the claws of The Mountain’s shield, the giant boar’s head waiting for Robert Baratheon in the woods – there’s been extreme compositions – Jory’s eye with the Kingslayer looming, Arya’s sword skewering the stable boy – and there’s been ‘collage’ ideas – Ned’s blood turning into birds, the butcher boy running in The Hound’s hot breath.

Screen Shot 2014-03-20 at 11.26.00 AMSeason One Episode 10

I hope they work as a set, with the border and typography helping to bring some consistency to what is a disparate set of images. I’ve been helped by a great team over at 360i who have been massively encouraging (and tolerant!) and who have weighed in with ideas, direction and thoughts along the way.

I’m already halfway through season two but the rate at which they’re being posted at beautifuldeath.com is chasing me down as relentlessly as The Hound…

As April 6th gets closer I have been contemplating my age for that is the day, so many years ago, that I was born.  It also just happens to be the date of the Season Premier for HBO’s hit series Game Of Thrones.  Well what if HBO and NETFLIX paired up their hit series to make a NEW series?

Screen Shot 2014-03-26 at 12.42.03 AMWell wait no more because you can see JUST how it would look. Here is how they are describing the video that mashes two of TV’s biggest series into one rather funny video.  Game of Thrones meets House of Cards in Frank Underwood’s new hit “House of Thrones.” Who lives? Who dies? You got to watch this toasty video to find out! Curated entertainment, straight from the toaster. Quiznos and Toasty TV sets life on fire and burns down the status quo, bringing you the hottest in music, film, art and entertainment.

Give it a watch and let us know what you think down in the comments section.  As an added bonus and because she is absolutely stunning on Game Of Thrones, I have included a clip of Emilia Clarke talking to Jimmy Fallon about her rather embarrassing audition for the series. MORE Daenerys Targaryen that’s what I say!

EXCLUSIVE: Matt Ferguson’s Pieces For Bottleneck Gallery’s Online Exhibit For “Game Of Thrones” Have Us Jonesing For The Season 4 Premier!

BLURPPY EXCL TMWe recently shared some fantastic art by Robert Ball for “Game Of Thrones” and as promised and first teased yesterday on Poster Buddies & Traders, we are bringing you your first look at Matt Ferguson’s work for Bottleneck Gallery’s first online exhibit which celebrates HBO’s Game Of Thrones.

winter_is_here_grandeTitled, “Winter Is Here” the exhibit celebrates the return of the hit series and welcomes fans back right before the Season 4 premier on April 6th.  Season 4 will have 10 episodes and is based on the second half of “A Storm of Swords“, the third book in the “A Song of Ice and Fire” series by George R.R. Martin.

Matt has done 2 sensational pieces that should help fans survive the wait until the premiers.  The first one features ‘the wall.’  Here is what WIKI has to say about this formidable barrier…

gicleedetail3The Wall is a colossal fortification which stretches for 300 miles along the northern border of the Seven Kingdoms, defending the realm from the wildlings who live beyond. The Wall is reported to be over 700 feet tall and is made of solid ice. It was supposedly constructed using both magic and mundane means some eight millennia ago, in the aftermath of the Long Night to defend the realm against the White Walkers who apparently dwell in the far north, though they are now considered myths by most.

gicleedetail4The Wall is defended and held by the Sworn Brothers of the Night’s Watch. Once an honorable institution, by the time of the War of the Five Kings, the Watch has fallen on hard times. It has become grievously under-strength, numbering less than a thousand men, an all-time low. While once great glory and honor was to be had in the Watch, in the present day it is often seen as a glorified penal colony.

gicleedetail1The current headquarters of the Watch is Castle Black, located in the shadow of the Wall at the northern end of the Kingsroad.  Eastwatch, located at the eastern end of the Wall, serves as the main port and resupply post for the Night’s Watch. The Shadow Tower at the western end of the Wall is the only other manned castle.  Among the abandoned castles along the length of the Wall are the Nightfort and Deep Lake. The region south of the Wall is called the Gift and is also controlled by the Night’s Watch.

gicleedetail2In the past, the Night’s Watch would send men out every morning to the north side of the Wall to cut down any trees growing within one mile of the structure, so the wildlings couldn’t use any natural cover to approach the base of the Wall undetected. With the ranks of the Night’s Watch drastically diminishing over the years, however, many of the areas between the three forts that are still manned have tall trees growing right up to the base of the Wall.

GOT“The Climb” by Matt Ferguson

11 X 24 Giclee

Matt’s other GOT print features my favorite, Daenerys Targaryen, sitting defiantly on the iron throne.  Here is a Wiki-breakdown of “the throne.

gotdetail1The Iron Throne is the throne upon which the King of the Andals and the First Men sits, located in the Great Hall of the Red Keep in the city of King’s Landing. Besides the King himself (or Lord Regent) only the Hand of the King may sit on the Iron Throne. The term is also used colloquially to refer to the monarchy that rules the Seven Kingdoms and the authority of the King (e.g. “Rebellion against the Iron Throne”).

gotdetail2gotdetail3The Iron Throne was forged at the order of Aegon the Conqueror, the first of the Targaryen Kings, who conquered six of the seven independent kingdoms of Westeros and unified them under his rule – the seventh kingdom of Dorne was later joined through a marriage alliance. The throne was allegedly forged from the 1,000 swords that had been surrendered to Aegon in the War of Conquest by the lords who had offered their fealty, though the actual number of the swords is less then two hundred. These were subsequently melted down by the fiery breath of Aegon’s dragon, Balerion the Black Dread, then beaten and bent into a throne of imposing appearance.

Artist Peter Gutierrez HAs Created A STUNNING Print Celebrating The Return Of HBO’s “Game Of Thrones”

$

I’d reckon that the MAJORITY of fans that read BLURPPY are all eagerly awaiting the return of HBO’s massive hit series, “Game of Thrones” this weekend.  Well artist and Poster Posse member, Peter Gutierrez took all that pent up anticipation and created a rather stunning print based on the show.

_GOT1Titled “Valar Morghulis” it roughly translates into “All Men Must Die” and is the tagline on HBO’s official posters for the Season 4 Premier. And what can you expect from season 4?  Read on…

_GOT2

_GOT4Encouraged by the Red Wedding slaughter in the Riverlands that wiped out many of their Stark nemeses, the Lannisters’ hold on the Iron Throne remains intact… but can they survive their own egos, as well as new and ongoing threats from the south, north and east? While an unbowed Stannis Baratheon continues to rebuild his army in Dragonstone, a more immediate danger comes from the south, as Oberyn Martell, the Lannister-loathing “Red Viper of Dorne,” arrives at King’s Landing to attend Joffrey’s wedding to Margaery Tyrell, and perhaps act on an ulterior agenda.

_GOT3In the north, a depleted Night’s Watch seems overmatched against the inexorable Wall advances of Mance Rayder’s army of wildlings, which in turn is being trailed by an even more formidable foe: the undead White Walkers. As if that weren’t enough, Daenerys Targaryen, accompanied by her menacing trio of dragons and army of Unsullied, is poised to liberate Meereen, the largest city in Slaver’s Bay, which could ultimately provide her with enough ships to sail to Westeros and reclaim the Iron Throne.

(Goes onsale 4/6 in the AM – click here)

Here is what Peter had to say about the project.

“Valar Morghulis” is High Valyrian for “All men must die”, a major theme in the series, and is expressed in part by the swords in the composition and the blood on some the key sigils.  Blood drips from the mouth of the lion (House Lannister), the antlers of of the stag (House Baratheon – and Tyrell if you notice the flowers), the tower (House Frey) and the wolf.  The wolf alludes to House Stark, though it is a representation of Ghost, who belongs to Jon Snow.  One of the blood drips on Ghost is shaped like a fish, representing House Tully.

_game of thrones-season 4 posterA massive cast is another key feature of the Game of Thrones series, so it was my attempt to include as many sigils as I could in an attempt to represent as many characters as possible in this current time stage of “before season 4 premieres”.  There are crows, indicative of the Night’s Watch.  The three-eyed raven that appears to Bran Stark is also included. While we’re on the topic of birds, it is worth pointing out that the sigils for House Arryn and for Littlefinger are also included.  The sun and spear are representing the anticipated Oberyn Martell, called Red Viper. Other sigils include a black dog (House Clegane, The Hound), an onion (House Seaworth, The Onion Knight), a wooden X with tenticles on it (the flayed man of House Bolton replaced with the squid of House Greyjoy), grains of wheat (House Selmy, Sir Barristan), a bear (House Mormont, Sir Jorah), and of course, one of Daenerys Targaryen’s dragons.

I know this doesn’t cover all the characters in the series, and there will be more characters in the future I’m sure, maybe for another print..

Just like an artist, always teasing what is to come.  Follow Peter on TWITTER to stay up to date on new projects and shows that he will have art at.  Check out a recent article we did with Peter that highlights his extraordinary “Skinmetal Series.”  It’s downright fantastic, completely different from his Game of Thrones piece and truly shows his diversity as an artist.

_Olly-Moss-GOT-set-4Let’s face it, EVERYONE is excited for tomorrow.  Aside from it being my birthday, it is also the premier of Season four of HBO’s insanely fantastic series, “Game of Thrones.”  You may have noticed that we are featuring a lot of art based off the show.  Well today will be no exception and we are starting things off with a new offering from the clever bloke from Winchester, U.K., Olly Moss.

_Olly-moss-got-set-5Olly teased fans the other day when he tweeted, “Oh man. I drew a buttload of GoT characters. A buttload.” After that he then posted some images and now fans are rabid to get them.  Lucky for everyone, it will be a timed release so if you want them, you shall have them!

_Olly-moss-got-set1Your eyes are not deceiving you and yes, he literally “drew a buttload!”, 30 to be exact and each one is highly desirable.  Now Olly is smart and will be offering these as individual pieces that measure 5 X 5 and he will also be selling them in sets and there will be a discounted full set option as well.  (These set are how he has them set up on his blog which leads me to believe, THIS is how he will offer the sets.)

_olly-moss-GOT-set3Head down to the COMMENTS section and let us know which ones are YOUR favorites…. Here is a pic of the collected set.  I WISH he offered this as a single print as well.  It would make my wallet, and walls MUCH happier.  Framing all of these is only the start, then ya gotta clear out wall space, get our your leveler, perfectly space them all.  I can barely figure out my 8-year old’s math homework, I’m pretty sure my wall will be all over the place!
